What is an au pair?
An au pair is a young adult who lives with a host family in another country and provides childcare support in exchange for cultural exchange opportunities, accommodation, meals, and a weekly stipend. It’s a unique opportunity to grow personally, gain international experience, and become part of a family while caring for children.
Who can apply from South Africa?
Called to Care International currently serves applicants from South Africa who are interested in pursuing an au pair opportunity focused on childcare, cultural exchange, and personal growth.
To be eligible for the au pair program, applicants must meet the following general requirements:
Be between 18 and 26 years old
• Be a South African citizen
• Have a valid passport (or be willing to obtain one)
• Have at least 200 hours of verified childcare experience and genuinely enjoy working with children
• Be comfortable communicating in conversational English
• Be in good health
• Have completed secondary education (high school or equivalent)
• Hold a valid driver’s license(except in certain infant-qualified placements)
• Be interested in living with an American host family for one year
• Be emotionally mature, responsible, adaptable, and of good character
• Be able to successfully complete the required background screening and reference checks
• Be willing to complete the required orientation and training program
• Be prepared to follow all program guidelines and household expectations
What kind of childcare experience do I need?
Yes. Childcare experience is an important part of becoming an au pair.
This may include:
Babysitting
Sunday school or church childcare
Tutoring
Nannying
Daycare work
